A simple procedure is one in which each step can be accomplished in a straightforward way, without invoking a set of sub-steps. Here's an example, which pertains to the maintenance of diesel engines on small sailboats:[1]
- Lay a clean towel over the stern lifeline.
- Go to engine compartment and decouple drive shaft from propeller shaft.
- Remove all mounting bolts.
- Lift engine from base.
- Carry engine topside to the stern lifeline.
- Swing and heave.
- Use the towel to mop the splash.
Note that this simple procedure has these characteristics: (a) each step starts with an imperative form of the verb, (b) the steps occur in a logical and temporal order, and (c) the steps are given in enough detail that they can be readily followed, but not in so much detail that the reader's intelligence is insulted.
